Store hours change, and most chains post Christmas hours only a few weeks ahead. This is a summary in our own words of what stores and news outlets said, read on October 26, 2026. Christmas Eve 2026 falls on Thursday, December 24.
Confirmed for 2026
When we checked, The Home Depot was the only large chain whose own page listed a Christmas Eve 2026 time:
| Store | Christmas Eve, December 24, 2026 | Where it says so |
|---|---|---|
| The Home Depot | Closes at 5 p.m. | Home Depot holiday hours page |
The same page says Home Depot stores are closed the next day, Christmas Day; local times can vary. Costco's holiday page for the fall season listed only its Thanksgiving closure, and Target's store pages look only two weeks ahead, so neither had a Christmas Eve 2026 time yet.
Are stores open on Christmas Eve?
Most are, for a shorter day. The store pages for 2026 could not be read or did not yet list hours, so this section is as reported by news outlets for Christmas Eve 2025. USA TODAY (December 24, 2025) and 9to5Toys (the same day) both listed these chains as open on Christmas Eve:
| Type of store | Open on Christmas Eve 2025, per both reports |
|---|---|
| Discount and warehouse | Walmart, Target, Costco, Sam's Club, BJ's |
| Home improvement | Home Depot, Lowe's |
| Clothing and home | Kohl's, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, IKEA |
| Office supplies | Staples, Office Depot and OfficeMax |
9to5Toys described most major stores as closing a little earlier than normal and said hours vary from store to store. USA TODAY gave a closing time for each chain; we do not repeat those 2025 times here, because they were for last year and a 2026 time can differ. Confirm with the store before you rely on this list.
Is Costco open on Christmas Eve?
Costco had not posted 2026 Christmas Eve hours on the pages we read. Tasting Table, writing in 2025, said Costco closes on seven holidays a year and that Christmas Eve is not one of them, though hours are usually shorter. Both 2025 Christmas Eve reports above list Costco as open that day. Check your warehouse page in Costco's locator, which shows upcoming holiday changes.
Is Walmart or Target open on Christmas Eve?
Both were open on Christmas Eve 2025, according to both reports above, and USA TODAY gave each a holiday closing time. Neither chain had a 2026 Christmas Eve time on a page we could read. Check your store page in mid December.
How to check your store
- Open the store locator on the chain's own site and pick your store; holiday changes appear there first.
- Look for a holiday hours page in the chain's newsroom, where Home Depot posted its full year.
- If you need order pickup or the pharmacy, check those hours on the store page too.
- Call the store if the page still shows regular hours close to the date.
Plan around the early close
Reports for 2025 said most major stores closed earlier than normal on Christmas Eve. Go in the morning if you can, and expect the store to be closed the next day: Home Depot says it will be, and see Christmas Day store hours for other chains.
