Store hours change. This is a summary in our own words, read on October 26, 2026. One fact comes from a store's own page; the rest come from news reports, because the other stores' pages we could read did not list Memorial Day hours. Memorial Day fell on Monday, May 25, in 2026, so treat this as a record of that day and confirm with your local store before you go next time.
What the stores themselves said
Home Depot was the one major chain we found with a published 2026 schedule that covers Memorial Day. Its holiday hours page listed the day as regular hours, so each store kept its normal Monday times. The same page sends shoppers to the store locator for local hours, since times vary by store.
What news reports listed
Costco, Walmart, Target and the grocery chains did not post 2026 Memorial Day hours on any of their pages we could read. Two news reports, from KIRO 7 in Seattle (published on the holiday) and Newsweek, agreed on these stores. The facts here are as those reports gave them, not official policy:
| Store | Memorial Day 2026 |
|---|---|
| Costco | Closed |
| Walmart | Open |
| Target | Open |
| Kroger | Open |
| Trader Joe's | Open |
| Home Depot | Open, regular hours (also on its own page) |
Newsweek added that some Target stores could close at a different time than usual, and that pharmacy counters at chains such as Kroger might not keep a full schedule. Other stores appeared in only one of the two reports, so we leave them out.
Is Costco, Walmart or Target open on Memorial Day?
- Costco: both reports said Costco warehouses were closed for Memorial Day 2026. Newsweek described it as a day Costco traditionally closes across the U.S. Costco's warehouse pages list upcoming holiday closures for each store, so look there in May.
- Walmart: both reports listed it as open. Newsweek said stores kept their usual hours.
- Target: both reports listed it as open, mostly on regular hours.
Who else is closed
Memorial Day is a federal holiday. KIRO 7 noted that banks, post offices and non-essential government offices were closed, and that some UPS retail locations closed while FedEx ran modified hours. If your errand involves a bank or a package drop-off, plan for that.
How to check Memorial Day hours next year
- Look for a holiday hours page from the store itself. Home Depot published its full 2026 list at the end of March.
- Open your local store page a few days before the holiday; one-day changes show there.
- Check pharmacy, gas station or service desk hours separately. They can differ from the main store.
- Treat news lists, including the ones we cite, as a guide only. A single store can differ.
