Store hours change, and most chains post holiday hours only a few weeks ahead. This is a summary in our own words of what stores and news outlets said, read on October 26, 2026. The next New Year's Day is Friday, January 1, 2027.
Confirmed for New Year's Day 2027
When we checked, The Home Depot was the only large chain whose own page listed a time for January 1, 2027:
| Store | New Year's Day, January 1, 2027 | Where it says so |
|---|---|---|
| The Home Depot | 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. | Home Depot holiday hours page |
The same page lists New Year's Eve, Thursday, December 31, 2026, as a close at 6 p.m., and asks shoppers to check the store locator because local times can vary.
What was open and closed on January 1, 2026
These are not hours for 2027. The store pages could not be read or did not yet list New Year's Day, so this section is as reported for New Year's Day 2026 by Scripps News (written before the holiday) and NBC New York (December 31, 2025). Both say the same about these chains:
| Open, hours may be modified | Closed |
|---|---|
| Walmart, Target, Macy's, Kohl's, CVS, Walgreens | Costco, Trader Joe's |
| Most national grocery chains, such as Albertsons, Whole Foods, Kroger and Aldi |
Both reports add that in-store pharmacies at grocery chains are usually closed that day, and that hours depend on the location. Confirm with the store before you rely on this list.
Is Walmart or Target open on New Year's Day?
Both were open on New Year's Day 2026, possibly with changed hours, according to both reports. Walmart's pages block automated readers and Target's store pages look only 14 days ahead, so neither showed a 2027 answer yet. Check your store page in late December.
Is Costco open on New Year's Day?
No, if the pattern holds. Tasting Table, writing in 2025, said Costco warehouses in the United States close on seven holidays a year, New Year's Day among them, and that New Year's Eve is a normal, if shorter, shopping day. Both 2026 reports listed Costco as closed on January 1. Costco's warehouse pages list upcoming closures, so check yours before you go.
Pharmacies and groceries
CVS and Walgreens were open on January 1, 2026, per both reports, with Walgreens pharmacy hours that vary by store. Grocery chains were mostly open but their pharmacies were usually closed. If you need a prescription that day, call the pharmacy itself.
How to check your store
- Open the store locator on the chain's own site and pick your store; holiday changes appear there first.
- Look for a holiday hours page in the chain's newsroom, where Home Depot posted its full year.
- Check New Year's Eve hours too if you plan to shop the night before; Home Depot closes early that evening.
- Call the store if the page still shows regular hours close to the date.
