Target Exchange Policy, Explained
Target exchanges most items in store within the return window and Target.com orders by phone; opened games, movies and music swap only for the same title.

Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of Target's Replacements and exchanges and Return policy help pages, read on October 26, 2026. Those official pages are the ones that apply; check them before you head to the store.
How exchanges work at Target
Target offers in-store exchanges on most items, as long as you are inside that item's return window. If a straight swap is not possible, the store may instead give you a return and let you buy the new item, still within the return rules. Target says it tries to honor the sale or promotional price you paid, but the result can differ depending on how you paid and which coupons or offers were used.
How long you have
The exchange window is the same as the return window for the item:
| Item | Window to return or exchange |
|---|---|
| Most unopened items in new condition | 90 days |
| Target Owned Brands, with a receipt | One year |
| Electronics and entertainment (not Apple or Beats) | 30 days |
| Apple and Beats products, phones included | 14 days |
| Phones bought in store or by Order Pickup | 14 days |
For Target.com orders, the clock starts when the order is invoiced, that is, when any part of it ships, is delivered by a Shipt shopper or is ready for pickup.
Items that are exchange-only once opened
Some products can no longer be refunded after you open them, only swapped:
- Music, movies, video games and software: exchange for the same title, on the same or a different gaming platform.
- Airbeds: exchange for a similar item.
Phones bought with a carrier contract may trigger the carrier's early termination fee, and contract items must go back in a store with a Target Tech Rep. Target says opened phones can carry a restocking charge of up to $35, except where the law forbids it; unopened phones have none.
Exchanging a Target.com order
Online orders can be exchanged in a store like any other purchase. To exchange by mail, call Target.com Guest Services at 1-800-591-3869. If the item you want is in stock, Target processes a return and places a new order at the original purchase price.
A replacement started online counts as an even exchange with no extra charge, subject to stock; returning the item in a store instead cancels it.
Items you cannot exchange
- Target Plus Partner items: these are refund only, never exchanged.
- Free promotional items: exchanged only if defective, with a receipt, and when a replacement is in stock.
- Pharmacy, Target Optical, Starbucks and Target Tech purchases: these go back to their own counters.
Exchanging without a receipt
Target says returns and exchanges without a receipt may be limited. Store staff can try a receipt lookup if you bring the Target Circle Card or the Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover card you paid with. With no proof of purchase at all, the refund may come as a merchandise return card instead.
Gifts
A gift can go back to a store with the gift receipt or packing slip, and the refund comes as a Target GiftCard, which you can spend on the item you actually want. Gift receipt returns cannot be done on the day the gift was bought.
