Laptop Processors: Core i5 vs i7 and the U, H Suffix

In an Intel laptop chip, the number after Core sets the performance tier and the end letter the power class; U means power efficient, H highest performance.

Bar chart of laptops on Wiki Shopping by processor maker. Intel is the largest group with 768 laptops, followed by AMD with 220, Qualcomm with 27 and Apple with 26.

The short answer

A laptop processor name has two parts that matter when you shop:

  • The tier: Core i5 or i7, or Core Ultra 5, 7 or 9. A higher number is a higher performance tier within the same generation.
  • The suffix: the letter at the end, such as U or H. It tells you the power class, which decides how much speed the chip can sustain and how much heat and battery it costs.

Of the 1,540 laptops listed on Wiki Shopping on October 26, 2026, 1,041 match a processor filter: 768 use Intel, 220 AMD, 27 Qualcomm and 26 Apple.

What the letter at the end means

Intel defines its laptop suffixes like this:

SuffixIntel's meaningLaptops on Wiki Shopping
HXHighest performance, all models unlocked112
HHighest performance134
UPower efficient97
VUsed on Core Ultra laptop chips61
G1 to G7Graphics level of the built-in graphics14 (G7 only)

So the U in an Intel processor name means power efficient. Intel also lists a P class, tuned for thin and light laptops, and uses H and HX for its highest performance classes, which draw more power.

Intel Core i5 vs i7 for a laptop

Intel's spec sheets for three 13th generation laptop chips show what changes with the tier and with the suffix:

Core i5-1334UCore i7-1355UCore i5-13420H
Cores (performance + efficient)2 + 82 + 84 + 4
Threads121212
Top turbo speed4.6 GHz5.0 GHz4.6 GHz
Processor base power15 W15 W45 W
Maximum turbo power55 W55 W115 W

The U-series i7 has the same core count as the U-series i5, with a higher top speed and more built-in graphics units (96 against 80). The H-series i5 has twice as many performance cores and three times the base power of either U chip. In practice the suffix often changes more than the tier: a U-series i7 is a power efficient chip, while an H-series i5 is built for heavier sustained work.

On Wiki Shopping, by Intel family: 173 laptops use Core Ultra 7, 142 Core Ultra 9, 126 Core i7, 93 Core i5 and 43 Core Ultra 5.

Core Ultra names

Intel's Core Ultra 5, 7 and 9 name a performance tier the same way i5, i7 and i9 do. The first digit of the model number is the generation: Intel's examples are 165H for the first generation and 288V for the second.

How long does a laptop last

No maker publishes one lifespan figure. Match the processor and memory to the software you plan to run in the coming years, not only today. Check the warranty length and whether the memory and storage can be upgraded, since those also decide when you need a new machine.

How we count

Processor counts cover laptops whose store listing names a processor model that Wiki Shopping groups into a filter; the other 499 laptops are not matched to one. Suffix and family counts include only Intel models whose name carries that suffix or family.
