When a new refrigerator, washer or range arrives, the old one has to go somewhere. Big appliance sellers offer to take it away, usually for a fee and usually only when you book it with the purchase. This page sums up, in our own words, what each store's own pages said on October 27, 2026. Prices and areas served change, so check at checkout.

Best Buy

Best Buy's delivery help page says it will haul away your old item for $49.99 when Geek Squad or Best Buy Home Delivery delivers a replacement, and that the item is recycled. Its appliance service pages add that haul-away is only offered in select areas, and an installer may need to charge an extra disposal fee because of federal, state or local rules.

With a Delivery Only booking, the old unit has to be ready to go. For example, Best Buy says it cannot take an old dishwasher unless it is already disconnected from the water supply, emptied and removed from the cabinets. When installation is booked, the crew disconnects the old unit, such as a dishwasher or dryer, before taking it.

No new purchase? Best Buy's standalone Haul Away and Recycle service costs $199.99 for up to two large products, such as TVs, major appliances, all-in-one computers and monitors, plus any number of select smaller products. You disconnect everything, empty out food and belongings, and remove batteries first. Best Buy says the service is not for businesses, it does not take furniture, fitness equipment or hazardous items, and hauled products cannot be returned. More in the Best Buy installation guide.

Lowe's

Lowe's says you add installation, haul away and any protection plan when you pick a new appliance online, and that installation is only offered in select markets. After the new unit is connected, the installer can haul away the old one; Lowe's notes that haul-away and dump charges may apply, so confirm the cost before you book. See the Lowe's installation guide.

Home Depot

Home Depot's appliance delivery page did not load for us, so we could not confirm a current haul-away price. Its appliance delivery checklist lists removing and hauling away your old appliance among the delivery team's jobs, and asks you to empty any appliance that will be taken, including emptying an old refrigerator first. Ask the store about haul away and its cost when you buy. More in the Home Depot installation guide.

Get ready for pickup

  1. Book it with the purchase. Each store ties haul away to the order or an add-on at checkout.
  2. Empty the old unit of food, clothes or dishes.
  3. Disconnect it if you chose delivery only, or the crew may leave it behind.
  4. Clear the path from the old unit to the door.
