Graphics Card VRAM: How Much You Need
VRAM is the memory on a graphics card that holds textures and other image data; Corsair suggests at least 8GB for 1080p gaming, 12GB for 1440p and 16GB for 4K.

The short answer
VRAM (video random access memory) is the memory built onto a graphics card. It holds the data the graphics chip needs right away, such as textures, shadows and the frames being drawn. It is separate from the computer's main RAM, so check it on the card's spec sheet.
Corsair suggests these minimums for gaming:
| Screen resolution | Minimum VRAM |
|---|---|
| 1080p | 8GB |
| 1440p | 12GB |
| 4K | 16GB |
Corsair adds that one or two steps above the minimum gives you room for newer games and higher settings.
How much VRAM do I need
Start from your monitor. A higher resolution has more pixels to fill, and high texture settings and ray tracing add more data on top.
For creative work, Corsair puts the floor at 6 to 8GB for 3D modeling, animation, video editing and graphic design, and 12 to 16GB as the usual target for complex projects.

VRAM in current cards
NVIDIA's own spec sheet shows how memory scales across its GeForce RTX 50 series:
| Card | VRAM | Memory type |
|---|---|---|
| RTX 5050 | 8GB | GDDR6 |
| RTX 5060 | 8GB | GDDR7 |
| RTX 5060 Ti | 8GB or 16GB | GDDR7 |
| RTX 5070 | 12GB | GDDR7 |
| RTX 5070 Ti | 16GB | GDDR7 |
| RTX 5080 | 16GB | GDDR7 |
| RTX 5090 | 32GB | GDDR7 |
Memory type is the generation of memory chip. A newer type moves data faster, which matters along with the amount. On Wiki Shopping, 99 cards list GDDR7 and 74 list GDDR6.
How to choose a graphics card
- Match the resolution. Use Corsair's minimums at the top as the floor for your monitor.
- Pick the chip family. On Wiki Shopping, 254 cards use an NVIDIA chip and 40 an AMD chip.
- Check the fit. Compare the card's length and power needs with your case and power supply; the maker lists both.
- Compare like with like. Many makers build cards on the same chip, so line up listings with the same chip and VRAM and compare their prices.
How we count
VRAM size, memory type and chip maker are read from each card's store listing. Cards that do not state a value are left out of that count. The counts change as listings are added or removed.
