IKEA buys back used, fully assembled IKEA furniture for store credit at participating US stores; you need IKEA Family, an online quote and an in-store check.

Store services change. This is a summary in our own words of IKEA's US Buyback and Resell page and its FAQ, read on October 27, 2026. The official page and your store are the ones that apply; check them before you load the car.

What the service is

IKEA buys back used IKEA furniture and pays in store credit on an IKEA Refund Card. The furniture is then resold at a lower price in the store's As-is section. It is available only at participating IKEA stores, and only to IKEA Family and IKEA Business Network members. IKEA Family is free to join.

The page listed 51 participating US stores on the day we read it, from Atlanta and Baltimore to Tempe and Woodbridge. Houston appeared both in that list and among stores still being worked on, so call ahead if you live there. IKEA says some stores cannot take part yet because of local, county or state laws.

How it works

  1. Get a quote online. Fill in the Buy Back form at IKEA.us/buyback with details on the item's condition. You need your IKEA Family member number. You cannot skip this step and just show up.
  2. Read the email. It holds your estimated value and a buyback number.
  3. Bring the furniture in. Take a copy of the quote, the number and the fully assembled item to a participating store, through the Exchanges and Returns entrance. Staff and carts can help unload from the loading zone spots.
  4. Get the final offer. A coworker checks condition, age and function. The final price can differ from the estimate.
  5. Take the credit or walk away. You are not required to accept. If you accept, you get store credit.

What IKEA takes

The page lists eligible categories, including:

  • Dressers, sideboards, display storage and small structures with drawers
  • Bookcases and shelf units
  • Small tables, dining tables and desks
  • Multimedia furniture and cabinets
  • Chairs and stools, but not upholstered or leather ones
  • Table and floor lamps that need no installation
  • Some children's furniture, which IKEA says is a newer addition

Only products listed on the online form are accepted, and the form is the final word.

What IKEA does not take

The item must be IKEA furniture you used personally, fully assembled and fully working. IKEA turns away hacked, modified, painted or incomplete pieces and recalled products (a recall may instead qualify for a refund). The FAQ also excludes, among others, sofas and armchairs, upholstered or leather products, mattresses and bed textiles, beds and bed frames, kitchens, modular wardrobes, electrical appliances, items with glass or mirrors, textiles and lighting accessories, and non-IKEA products. Its two lists do not fully agree on children's items, so check the form.

The store credit

The credit works in any IKEA store or online in the US and does not expire. IKEA cannot replace a lost card, so keep it safe. IKEA will not match prices from resale sites such as Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist, and it does not offer home pickup for buyback items.

Buying resold items

Bought back furniture sits in the As-is section under Buy back and Resell signs. Resell items are excluded from the return policy, though they can be sold back again later. See IKEA As-Is Section.
