Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of the stores' own payment and returns pages and the three lenders' pages, read on October 27, 2026. A store can add or drop a lender at any time, so check the payment options at checkout.

How the three services differ

ServiceBasic plan, as the lender describes it
AfterpayPay in 4 interest-free installments, generally over six weeks, at partner brands; late fees may apply
KlarnaPay in 4: four interest-free payments, the first when the order ships and the rest every two weeks; soft credit check; late fee up to $7, capped at 25% of the order
AffirmPay in 4 at 0% APR, or monthly plans at 0% to 36% APR depending on credit

"Not listed" means the store page we read did not name that lender. It does not prove the store refuses it.

Target

Target's accepted payments page lists six installment options for Target.com and the app: Affirm, Sezzle, PayPal Pay in 4, Afterpay, Klarna and Zip. None are listed for paying at the register, but Target's financing page explains that Affirm can be used in stores through the Affirm app with a virtual card in a phone wallet, or with the physical Affirm Card. Target says Affirm needs a cart of at least $50 and offers 3, 6, 12 or 18 months at 10% to 36% APR.

Amazon and Costco

Amazon's Affirm page asks for at least $50 of eligible items and offers 3 to 48 equal monthly payments at 10% to 36% APR. Costco's Affirm page sets a $400 minimum, plans of 3 to 36 months and 10% to 36% APR. Neither page names Afterpay or Klarna.

Sephora, Apple and Zappos

Sephora's returns page treats Klarna and Afterpay as payment methods, with refunds going back to your Klarna or Afterpay account. Apple says Affirm or Klarna can be picked through Apple Pay when you shop online or in apps on an iPhone or iPad, not in its stores, and Apple Upgrade leases are provided by Klarna. Zappos's returns page explains how Afterpay refunds work, which shows Afterpay is used there.

Before you split a payment

  • A return changes the plan. Zappos says Afterpay refunds can take up to 20 business days.
  • Late fees apply when a payment fails at Klarna and may apply at Afterpay.
  • For a different way to spread a cost without borrowing, see stores with layaway.
