How Walmart Clearance Works

Walmart clearance is marked with yellow stickers, varies by store and can ring up below the tag; Walmart does not price match its own Walmart.com clearance.

Walmart does not publish a clearance guide that we could read: walmart.com showed a bot check or a missing page when we checked on October 27, 2026. The price match and return rules below come from Walmart's corporate policy page. The in-store tips are as reported by The Krazy Coupon Lady (updated January 2026) and Tasting Table (May 2026), which agree on the points used here. Clearance varies by store, so treat them as tips, not promises.

What clearance means at Walmart

Clearance is a markdown on items a store is selling off. It is not the same as Rollback: Walmart's price match policy lists clearance and Rollback as two separate kinds of special event pricing.

How to spot clearance in a store

  • Yellow stickers. Both guides say to look for yellow clearance stickers on the shelf or the item.
  • Odd places. Tasting Table reports that clearance may sit on end caps or in a forgotten corner rather than in one marked section, and that reduced items can turn up away from their usual aisle.
  • Every store is different. Both guides stress that what is on clearance, and how much, depends on the store.

The tag may not be the real price

The Krazy Coupon Lady reports that Walmart updates clearance prices in its system even when nobody puts a new sticker on the item. So the price at the register can be lower than the yellow tag. The Walmart app has a barcode scanner you can use in the store to see that store's price before you go to checkout. The guide says to turn on location services or use the store Wi-Fi so the app shows your store's price.

If the app shows a higher price than the sticker, mention it to the cashier before you pay.

Clearance and price matching

Walmart's price match policy lets a store match an identical item's price on Walmart.com at checkout, with conditions. Walmart.com clearance prices are one of the exceptions: Walmart lists clearance, Rollback, Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals and other limited-time promotions as prices it does not match. Store clearance prices are also not matched between stores, since Walmart does not match prices from other Walmart or Neighborhood Market stores.

Can you return clearance items

Walmart's return policy gives most items 90 days, with exceptions for certain categories. Clearance is not one of the final sale categories Walmart lists, which include trading cards, precious metals, alcohol, tobacco and gift cards. The Krazy Coupon Lady also reports that clearance items are not final sale and can go back within 90 days with proof of purchase. The category rules still apply, so a clearance phone or appliance follows its category's window. See the Walmart return policy for those.

Tips before you buy

  1. Scan the item in the Walmart app instead of trusting the sticker.
  2. Check packaging and dates on clearance food; Tasting Table warns against dented cans.
  3. Keep the receipt, since returns need proof of purchase.
  4. Do not count on a price match for a clearance price.
